Map with Checkboxes

                                          http://www.usda.gov/maps/maps/kyfcompassmap.htm

This map, "Know your farmer, know your food" , allows the user to explore farming in the U.S..  My favorite feature of this map is the farmers market locator.  If the user zooms in close enough each point becomes a button.  When clicked on, a pop-up appears that describes the market and contains a link to the market website.  Information pop-ups also appear for other layer points.

Olympics Interactive Map

This animated map has a roll-over feature, in which information about a particular area or event pops up when you roll over certain images.  Some words in the pop-ups are highlighted in dark blue; these link you to websites that tell you more about the subject.  You can zoom in and out and there is a small map in the bottom left corner that links to Google Maps to show where Sochi is located in Russia.

Neat Interactive Map with Timeline

http://www.nationalgeographic.com/seamonsters/timeline/index.html#triassic

This map shows where prehistoric aquatic dinosaurs would have been found based on fossil records.  The user can explore the site using the timeline or by clicking on the continents.  The location of each species is depicted by an orange circle with a plus sign.  A window pops up with a description and an image of the dinosaur.  After a dinosaur has been viewed the circle turns brown, so that the user knows what he/she has already looked at.  I chose this map because I like the topic and found it user friendly and aesthetically pleasing.  Also, the rotating images are really cool.
